May I extend to you a warm welcome to the new Eventide Owners Association website. Here we hope to set out the aims of the Association, present some historical and more recent items of interest and to enable a good deal of the plans information to be put into the public domain.
I am honoured to have been elected as President in January 2009, especially when I look back over the past forty-seven years since the Association was founded and the august list of past Presidents.
I think it is particularly important to maintain the plans of the Yachting Monthly designs, which were transferred to the EOA by the magazine in late 1997. Whilst there may not be so many people building their own boats these days the designs do represent an important archive that needs to be easily accessible. We have therefore included on this website all the details of the Yachting Monthly designs. These were formerly contained in the Study Plans which were previously sold as a booklet. In addition there are also some further Maurice Griffiths designs to which we have access. The decision has also been taken to provide full copies of the Yachting Monthly plans to members at cost and with each set of plans will be included a copy of Michael Verney's book "Building Chine Boats" and, in the case of the YM Senior a copy of the EOA publication "We Built a Senior".
I invite you to peruse this site, and for those wishing to obtain further information or to become a member then initial contact details can be found on the EOA Membership page.
Rodney Leaper, C.Eng, M.I.Mech.E, M.I.E.D

The business of the AGM will be kept as brief as possible to allow time for socialising and for the raffle, the proceeds of which will be donated to charity (usually the RNLI). Donations of prizes for the raffle would be gratefully appreciated.
If there is any matter you wish to be discussed at the AGM please notify the President in writing before Christmas 2009. Contact details are inside the front cover of the Bulletin, or you may email via the website.
Please return any trophies, in clean condition, either to a committee member prior to the meeting or bring them with you, so that they can be presented to the new recipients.
We look forward to seeing you there (Members only).
Our annual Cruising Log Competition, which is open to Members only, is upon us again.
Entries may be in narrative form or simply a copy of the boat's log. They should be clearly written or typed and give details of the boat and her crew. Logs should preferably include the distances and times of all passages, hours under sail and under power or both, total distances covered, and include a simple chart of the cruise where possible.
Winning entries will be published in the Bulletin during 2010 and Trophies will be awarded at the AGM in January. The trophies on offer are:
President's Trophy (The MG Plate) - Presented by Maurice Griffiths GM, ARINA. This is awarded for the best log submitted.
Maiden Voyage Trophy - For the beginner in cruising and the "family" crew whose summer cruise is perhaps only a potter along the coast or a dash across the Channel. Eligible yachts include new builds, newly restored yachts and the newly owned. Logs should include a short summary of the owner's experience and the ages of the crew in under 21.
Passage Trophy - Presented by Dr. Richards for the best passage between the home country and a foreign port or between two foreign ports. Purely coastal passages are excluded unless the terminal ports are both foreign to the yacht's home port.
We look forward to receiving your entries, which should be submitted to the President, Rodney Leaper, before Christmas 2009 to be in with a chance of winning a trophy. His address can be found on the inside front cover of the Bulletin. Entries may also be submitted by email, either via the website or sent to the Editor (email contact also inside front cover of the Bulletin). If email entries are sent please ensure that any accompanying photographs are of a small file size (ie approx 100kb max).
This will be held on the August Bank Holiday weekend of 29th - 31st August at Bradwell, on the River Blackwater.
This event has for a very long time been one of the traditional EOA meetings and indeed when sufficient boats attend has featured a friendly "sailing match" for which the "Nelson Trophy" is awarded. This trophy is a beautiful shield which was donated to the Association by Tony Nelson back in 1982. When there insufficient attendees for a sailing match the trophy has sometimes been awarded to the boat sailing the furthest to the meeting.
The host boat this year is the Barbican, "Red Dawn IV" owned by Rodney and Elizabeth Leaper and can be found in Bradwell Marina in berth #B9.
Highwater: Bradwell, Sat 29th - 0700 & 2000 approx
The sailing match or a sail in company is scheduled for Sunday 30th, either side of Low water, which is predicted to be at 1500 approx. Neap tides apply so entrance to Bradwell Creek is not too restricted.
Non-members interested in joining the EOA are welcome to attend, please do make yourselves known.
Saturday 25th July has been slected as the date for this event. Charles Portway has kindly agreed to organise and suggests we meet at about 1300 hrs. - bring your own barbeque and food. Travel by road or sea. Stutton Ness is on the river Stour on the north bank a little upstream from Wrabness. High water is about 1530 hrs. Non-members are welcome to come along - do please introduce yourselves.
The President, Rodney Leaper, some years ago prepared an illustrated talk for yacht clubs entitled "Maurice Griffiths - The Man & His Boats" and he is happy to give this talk for a modest fee - to cover expenses and a small donation to the EOA funds.
The EOA will be exhibiting at the Beale Park Classic Boat Show again this year. This takes place from 5th & 7th June at Beale Park, Lower Basildon, Reading, Berkshire, RG8 9NH. This is a beautiful location alongside the river Thames.
The new Stitch & Glue YM Senior "Proto", built by David and Alison Seymour-Jones, is now complete and will be on display. The historic YM Senior "Pau Amma" will also be on display. This well-known Senior was originally owned by Martin Lewis who sailed out of Pin Mill on the river Deben, where she was built by Harry King & Son. After Martin's death the little yacht came into the care of Rodney and Elizabeth Leaper and has undergone a complete refurbishment.
Please visit our stand when you visit the show, we would love to meet you. Members who can spare a few hours to help man the stand should contact David Seymour-Jones, with the subject "Beale Park", or by telephone for which you can find his number in the members Bulletin.
This was a relatively successful show despite the weather being a little unkind at times. Many people showed considerable interest in both versions of the YM Seniors that were exhibited as well as other EOA designs. A simple competition was held and the winner was drawn by past president Bob Eatwell and is Mr. J. Morrison from Newton in Derbyshire. He wins a framed set of Maurice Griffiths prints and association membership for the current year.
"Cevamp, Mike and Me" by Jackie Williamson
Acorns Publishing.ISBN 978-0-9557375-0-3
£8.99
This new book recently arrived on our desk. Rarely do we come across a book of such specific interest to our members. Cevamp is a 26ft Eventide built by former EOA member Alex Williamson. During the building a Builders Meet was held at his home, a pub in mid-Wales, which was reported in the members Bulletin of Winter 1986. One of our current members remembers attending the meet. Cevamp, sail number YM1202 was launched in July of that year. Unfortunately by that time Alex was no longer fit enough to do much sailing and so use of the boat fell to his son Mike and future daughter-in-law Jackie.
The book is a wonderful tale of the early sailing adventures of the boat and of the couple during their courtship, played off against the frequent foul weather of the Irish Sea. As Jackie gets to grips with sailing skills we visit with her the harbours of the area, meet up with interesting people and enjoy the wildlife. It is a highly recommended, entertaining read, both as a story of romance and a recounting of sailing adventures and should interest not only sailing enthusiasts but also the less nautically inclined members of their families. This well written book is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable sailing books we have ever reviewed.
Jackie Williamson has very kindly offered the book to members at a special reduced price. Please refer to your Spring 2009 Bulletin for details. You have until 30th September to take up the offer.
The book usually retails at £8.99 and can be ordered from all good book shops by quoting the ISBN number. It is also available on line from Amazon or can by ordered direct from the author by emailing wordaid@btinternet.com. There is an additional charge of £2.50 to cover post and packing.
